Frederick Sandys, 1866-68, Medea
This painting caused a significant scandal when it was rejected for the Royal Academy in 1868: many commented on the irrationality behind its political non-acceptance and after it was finally shown in 1869, The Times newspaper issued a review criticising the reasons behind the initial rejection from the Academy. The model for Medea was a gypsy woman called Keomi, one of Sandys’ lovers.
