GRACE UNDER PRESSURE

John Everett Millais

Art. Pre-Raphaelites. Shakespeare. Indie/Guitar/Rock/Classical Music. Taylor Swift.

'I think about what I’d think of my decisions when I’m 80 looking back, and it helps me make sound, responsible choices.' - Taylor Swift

(If you are a band following me in the hopes I will check out your music, I'm sorry but I probably won't. I don't mean to be rude. I usually find new music through NME Radio.)

Sang froid and Equanimity. Grace under pressure.

'Fill the unforgiving minute...'.

'Oh, Maya says I'm lacking in depth,
I will do my best' - The Strokes

'You're all Chrome' - Heads Will Roll - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

'The ballad of a dove. Go with peace and love.' - The Band Perry

'Excuse me if I spoke too soon
My eyes have always followed you around the room' - NGHFB

'Take my hand, knot your fingers through mine / And we'll walk from this dark room for the last time' - Open Your Eyes - SP

'Shut your eyes, I spin the big chair / And you'll feel dizzy, light, and free / And falling gently on the cushion / You can come and sing to me' - Shut Your Eyes - SP

'Come to me. Just in a dream. Come on and rescue me' - Madness - Muse

Desire leads to SUFFERING.

'The whole of life becomes an act of letting go but what always hurts the most is not taking a moment to say goodbye.' - Life of Pi

David Lammy, Labour MP for Tottenham: ”Let me speak frankly: separate but equal is a fraud. It is the language that tried to push Rosa Parks to the back of the bus. It is the motif that determined that black and white people could not possibly drink from the same water fountain, eat at the same table or use the same toilets.”

The equation of homosexuals and murderers is also, it seems to me, not so much offensive as bizarre. Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that same-sex non-procreative sex acts are as bad as murders. I know that’s completely insane, but bear with me. Murderers still have the core constitutional right to marry the person they love. Even people on death row who cannot even consummate a marriage because they are incarcerated retain the core right to marry, according to Supreme Court precedent. Dead-beat fathers who have abandoned children from previous marriages and failed to provide child support equally retain a constitutional right to re-marry as often as they wish (also ruled on by SCOTUS).’

If the court has already determined that mass murderers have an inviolable right to marry, how is allowing gay people to marry somehow a sign of moral decline? If the court has already made non-procreative sex constitutionally protected for straight people, how is it that the very same thing, condemned for the very same reasons by Scalia’s and my own hierarchy, is obviously immoral when it comes to homosexuals?’

Ian Mckellen - Vanity Fair Interview

Yes. Because the minute I came out, I felt immediately better in every way. I felt relieved that I wasn’t lying. You know, when I was growing up in 1950s England, there were no gay clubs I knew about. There were no bars. Homosexuals were shamed publicly and imprisoned. You were on your own, looking over your shoulder all the time, hoping in the handshake of a stranger that he might be somebody gay.”’

“Defenders of Marriage” by [the brilliant] Roy Zimmerman

‘Every time we think about same-sex parents
“Oh, my gosh!” we exclaim
I mean, two people who want to provide a protective
And nurturing family environment
Have they no shame?
It’s so deviant!
It’s the Lord’s holy word, as my second wife said to my third’

ZAKARIA: Right, to take on the three Gs, gays, guns, and God. JOHNSON: Yes. ZAKARIA: On all them, from what I’ve read of you, you seem to be more — you’re closer to a Democrat rather than a Republican. JOHNSON: Sounds like it, yes. I mean I think it’s — I didn’t know that gays couldn’t get — I was very surprised to discover that it was bad. I mean it’s ridiculous. That’s my — I mean, there you go. I mean, I’m sorry, it just seems to me that this is — marriage is an ancient sacrament, a pre- Christian, by the way, system. It antedates all current religions. What’s it got to with anybody? That’s my view.

"Wilde: for a younger man as there was between David and Jonathan, such as Plato made the very basis of his philosophy, and such as you find in the sonnets of Michelangelo and Shakespeare. It is that deep spiritual affection that is as pure as it is perfect. It dictates and pervades great works of art, like those of Shakespeare and Michelangelo, and those two letters of mine, such as they are. It is in this century misunderstood, so much misunderstood that it may be described as “the love that dare not speak its name,” and on that account of it I am placed where I am now. It is beautiful, it is fine, it is the noblest form of affection. There is nothing unnatural about it. It is intellectual, and it repeatedly exists between an older and a younger man, when the older man has intellect, and the younger man has all the joy, hope and glamour of life before him. That it should be so, the world does not understand. The world mocks at it, and sometimes puts one in the pillory for it."

Olbermann: Gay marriage is a question of love →

‘The world is barren enough.

It is stacked against love, and against hope, and against those very few and precious emotions that enable us to go forward. Your marriage only stands a 50-50 chance of lasting, no matter how much you feel and how hard you work.

And here are people overjoyed at the prospect of just that chance, and that work, just for the hope of having that feeling.  With so much hate in the world, with so much meaningless division, and people pitted against people for no good reason, this is what your religion tells you to do? ’

So when you see the backlash against bullying statutes that protect members of GLBT community. Remember that these protections could also be there to shield girls that like to play football and ride dirt-bikes, and boys that write poetry or design clothes.

Your sexual orientation shouldn’t matter, nor should your gender identity or gender expression.
